Postmenopausal women make up about 70% of all people with Alzheimer's disease. Some studies have hinted at a hormonal cause, and some people remarked that autoimmune diseases are more common in females, and women generally have increased immunoreactivity compared to men.

Previous studies show that while hormone therapy initiated at the time of menopause reduces the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, on the contrary when hormone therapy is administered after the cessation of menopausal symptoms, it does not provide any benefit.
